DAY ONE DONE

20140307-185653.jpg

Two boroughs down, three to go. Trekking through The Upper East Side into East Village. I was on my way to The Aperture Foundation when a close friend wanted to link up, so I left Chelsea and took off to Midtown. We then crossed The Williamsburg Bridge to go to his house in Bushwick (if you wanna sound cool). Talked to some loke- dawgs (yes the West Coast slang is necessary) and heard some cool stories. GEARS DOWN

20140307-125407.jpg

So we landed at JFK around 11:15 and thusly embarked on my first trip to NYC. We dropped our bags at the hotel and and went around the corner for some food. This city really does never sleep, and we are staying in what seems to be a sleepy part of town. But what do I know?

It's amazing how at home I feel considering its thirty some odd degrees outside and this city is fucking DIRTY! I'm still struggling to take it all in and it's almost one pm. MORE TO COME

Stagnant Beauty

From looking on my blog one would think I don't create much. That couldn't be farther from the truth. I just don't show much. Over he last few years I have made several attempts to get more work to the world. This need becomes more evident as I fill another hard drive with useless images that no- one will ever see. So, no more promises. Just another photo! 20140304-095626.jpg

First in a Few Fears

I am posting things a little backwards here because this shot is it for me. I pass this ally every day on my way to work and it has never made a compelling image until I picked up a Canon EOS RT a few days ago. This is the first time I have shot film in about 5 years; I was scared. It was interesting shooting in lighting that I know and second guessing myself. But, true to form, I trusted my gut and this is what came out. I would like to think I could have made this shot digitally, and I most certainly color corrected it that way. But even with my level of understanding of the technical side of both analogue and digital techniques, this film shot "has it". The "it" that is lacking in all the other images I have made here. So, kudos to film?

The images below are also shot with film, and they are also my first few shots on this new camera. Funny enough, of things that should never be shot on 35mm (action photography).

I started shooting at about 13 because some of my friends skated for a large team. Those road trips and silly antics made me fall for the art, but I sure dont miss the high frame rates and low success rates of this type of photography, especially with film. So, kudos to film?

Soooooo, Kudos to film for inspiring me to love the art. Kudos to film for making me switch to digital. Kudos to film for re-invigorating my passion in image making during busy times!

Oh, hello again

It has been a crazy month and with almost no imagery to show for it. I figured that I should use some of the money I have put away to breath life back into my picture making. Sooo, back to film I go with this interesting little camera (I always wanted one and now it's mine). image

Still Watching

Lately, I have been shooting more and more. I am acquiring a lot of data. And I feel, once again, that I dont know what to do with it all. The difference? I'm ok with it this time. I dont care if all my images have METADATA. I dont care if they get catalogued or even set for web viewing, let alone printing. I had high hopes of getting back into printing, but what? I dont know if I could cull my work into a show. Meaning, I think anything attributed statement wise from a "show" of mine would be contrived. Im just watching the world. It's pretty out there. I wish more people truly looked "out" more.

I dont meen to sound so dreary. I am shooting better and better work every day. Hopefully this, whatever it is, will help me to edit more. Maybe something WILL come of my view on this life I live. Maybe a book is due...

WATCH OUT

Windows: My Voyeuristic Tendencies

I often walk around with a camera, something I learned when going to school for photojournalism. Something ingrained deep within. So much so that when I don't have a camera on me, I feel "lacking". Even to the extremities of my best judgment; my shoulder throbbing in pain would be one example. One reason is that I feel like I might miss something. BUT the biggest reason of them all, I like to look through a lens.

I specifically like to train my lens on people or some form of "signs of life". To be frank, I like to watch people without them knowing. I like to catch them. At the most extreem of this activity, I watch windows. Hoping that, in some brief moment, I will catch a glimpse of life within.

1.4.2012

As a society we share space and time, yet somehow the experiences remain unique to the individual. Take for instance Josh and I, we are a couple, we both got our BFA's in Photography, we both wait tables in San Francisco and we live together. Despite all the time and experiences we share our view of them are completely different. On our first day off together in 2012 we rode past the de Young museum on our bikes after we had coffee at the beach and we decided to go up to the observation tower. These are the images we came away with.
